AFC Lancaster Lions Joins UPSL for 2019

Lancaster, PA - AFC Lancaster Lions is proud to announce that we have joined the United Premier Soccer League (UPSL) for the 2019 season. The Lions are making the transition to the UPSL and will be joining over 300 teams across the nation in the country's largest soccer league. Please see the below press release from the UPSL!

February 21, 2019 – Los Angeles – The United Premier Soccer League (UPSL) is excited to announce AFC Lancaster Lions as a new league member kicking off with the 2019 Spring Season.

Based in Lancaster (Pa.), AFC Lancaster Lions will begin play in the UPSL Northeast Conference, and will host its UPSL home games at 2,500-seat Lancaster Catholic Stadium (655 Stadium Rd., Lancaster, PA 17601) in compliance with UPSL Minimum Standards.

United Premier Soccer League East Coast Director Jim Antonakas said, "We'd like to welcome AFC Lancaster Lions to the UPSL Northeast Conference for the 2019 Spring Season. The owner has experience in the Pro Development arena, and Lancaster Lions has been competitive in the American Soccer League. Brian Ombiji has a strong plan with the AFC Lancaster Lions Academy, and we're excited to see the talent that will flow from it for years and years to come."

AFC Lancaster Lions is an extension of AFC Lancaster Lions Academy, an elite-level academics and sports education experience offered to the diverse population of enrolled scholars in Lancaster (Pa.).

AFC Lancaster Lions Academy provides a professional training environment for passionate athletes with a desire to work hard and improve. Students complete a full academic workload on a daily basis prior to their sport-specific training schedule in the afternoon and evening. Academic standards must be met in order to participate in the soccer academy.

Brian Ombiji is CEO and Majority Owner of AFC Lancaster Lions. A native of Kenya, Ombiji was an NAIA All-American at Columbia (Ky.)'s Lindsay Wilson College, and played with the Michigan Bucks (USL League 2) before a stint as a professional player with Harrisburg City Islanders (USL) from 2007-'11.

AFC Lancaster Lions Owner Brian Ombiji said, "We are excited to join the UPSL and begin a new era for our club. Zachary Oster is the club's General Manager. Thomas Tamale serves as the team's Head Coach. Jenn Hood serves as the Vice President of Operations.

United Premier Soccer League

The UPSL was formed in 2011 and currently includes more than 300 teams in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin. UPSL is the fastest growing Pro Development League in the USA, with 400-plus teams targeted for 2019 Fall Season. Each UPSL team is individually owned and operated, and is responsible for maintaining either UPSL Pro Premier Division or Championship Division minimum standards.

UPSL teams are all eligible to participate in the U.S. Open Cup Qualifying Rounds through the leagues affiliation with the U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) and the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA).
